Buntness in the garden, tub and room

Stinging nettles are charming leaf ornamental plants in the garden, tubs and rooms. You can find more about the location and the care here.

It is not always the breathtaking flowering plants that give our gardens a magical flair. Often it is attractive leaf colors and shapes that achieve an equally tantalizing expression. I am thinking directly of the colorful nettle (Solenostemon scutellarioides), which, with its striking features, contributes to the staging of a lively and colorful plant spectacle in the home garden.

Incidentally, the stinging nettle comes from the tropics of Asia. For our climatic conditions, the Solenostemon Scutellarioides hybrids are not winter-proof outdoors. However, the evergreen perennial as a pot and indoor plant has excellent opportunities for a multi-year culture.

Stinging

As a herbaceous foliage plant the colorful nettle is known. It belongs to the mint family. From June to October, the colorful nettle unfolds its flowers, which look rather unimpressive. The attraction of this plant comes from its colored, as well as wavy or slotted leaves. Depending on the species and variety, the leaf ornamental plant can reach a stature height of 30 to 80 centimeters.

Cultivate the stinging nettle ...

  1. ... in the garden as an annual plant. If you cut cuttings in the summer or fall, then you can multiply these in the pot for the next year.
  2. ... in the bucket for the terrace or the balcony. After a cut in autumn, the container plant can be overwintered in a bright place in the room.
  3. ... as a houseplant. If you lovingly care for them, you will have a colorful home decoration over the years.
  • Tip: You can get young plants as well as stinging nettle seeds in the garden shop and in the online plant shop.

Buntnessel - the right choice of location

Decisive for the leaf coloration is the location of the leaf ornamental plant. Whether in the bed, in the bucket or as a houseplant , the stinging nettle wants the brightest possible location. Therefore, you best offer your Buntnessel a sunny place, without blazing midday sun. When choosing the location, make sure that the shrubby plant is in a sheltered position. So you avoid a possible wind break of the growth-friendly plant.

Optimal soil for the bed, pot and tubBuntnessel - the right choice of location

All three cultivars of the Solenostemon scutellarioides thrive best in well-drained, humus-rich, nutrient-rich and moist soil. It also does not harm the petal plant if the substrate is slightly acidic. Only lean, calcareous earth does not like the decorative plant.

Pour with lime-free water

Use rainwater if possible for watering . Kalkhaltiges tap water tolerates the plant bad. In summer, pours the Solenostemon scutellarioides daily, except on rainy days.

If your stinging nettle is in a sunny position in the room, ie by the window, the moisture in the substrate evaporates quickly. Therefore, you should keep the houseplant regularly moist - but avoid waterlogging. This also applies to the leaf decoration plants in the bucket on the terrace .

Also ensure sufficient humidity. So you can regularly spray the pot and container plant with lime-free, not too cold water.

Nutrient supply for the stinging nettle

Stinging nettles in the bed are supplied with a long-term fertilizer for flowers during planting.

The colorful jewelry in the bucket you administer during the growing season once a week liquid green plant fertilizer.

As a houseplant on the windowsill you fertilize every two weeks with a houseplant fertilizer.

Before hibernation, you will stop fertilizing your tub culture at the end of August and will not pick it up until March. How often you supply nutrients to your foliage plant in the room during the resting phase is shown in the dosing instructions for the indoor plant fertilizer.

Solenostemon scutellarioides is cut tolerant

With a plant cut, you can keep the Buntnessel in good shape. The following tips:
  1. Trim the young plant to keep it nice and bushy.
  2. You can remove old and bald shoots without hesitation, the fast-growing rarity soon took on its luscious form again.
  3. Remove the inconspicuous inflorescences. Otherwise, the plant puts all its energy in the development of flower and seed stalks and the growth of the jewelry leaves is weakened.

Hover over potted plants

If you want to overwinter your decorative leaf jewelery plant in a bucket, you have to bring it into the house. After all, the tropical plant needs a temperature minimum of about 12 ° Celsius. Previously, cut the stinging nettle back by about two-thirds in the fall. Then put the bucket in a bright place in the room. Do not forget to water the plant every now and then. The root ball must not dry out. At the end of hibernation, with the onset of sprouting, the plant gradually gets more moisture.

Diseases and pests

Nursing mistakes affect the health of the stinging nettle and cause pest infestation.

Root rot due to waterlogging

Waterlogging usually leads to root rot. If you notice that your room or tub plant is ailing, check the plant substrate in the pot or bucket. If it has an unpleasant smell, then the root is attacked. Carefully remove the plant from the pot and remove the root ball from the soil. If this is only slightly affected, then you can carefully remove the diseased root parts and replant the Solenostemon scutellarioides in new soil. However, if a large part of the root is damaged, then dispose of the diseased plant in the household waste.

Spider mites by dry air

In places with dry air, spider mites like to settle on the leaves - usually houseplants. Isolate the infested stinging nettle from other room cultures. Then shower off your petal and wrap it with a transparent foil bag. The developing humidity in the air causes the spider mites to die off after 14 days at the latest.

Summary:

The Buntnessel completes the colorful spectacle in the garden. In the bed, the plant is kept annual, as a houseplant or cultivated in a bucket, it develops into a perennial, evergreen greenhouse. This tropical-looking ornamental leaf plant favors a bright location. The plant is watered regularly and only with rainwater. Container plants can overwinter in the house. These need a temperature of at least 12 ° Celsius.
