Children quickly put something in their mouths, or smell trees and shrubs. If these plants are poisonous, it can be dangerous.
When walking through the garden center or leafing through various garden catalogs, plants are often selected only for color and growth height. However, this can be quite dangerous, especially when children are in the garden. There are a number of plants that are toxic or dangerous to health, but you do not look at it externally. So that nothing can happen here, here are the most important poison plants that you should not or only with extreme caution in the garden should have.
Ivy - the poison is in the fruit
Ivy (Hedera helix) is a climbing shrub that can grow up to 20 meters high. For this reason, the plant is often used for greening of bare walls or as a screen. The danger of ivy is the fruit. In the flesh of the berry poisonous saponins "hide". Even when eating only a few berries, the first signs of intoxication occur. But the leaves of the vine are not completely harmless, they can cause rash.
Laburnum - all plant parts are poisonous
The laburnum looks beautiful when it blooms, just do not get too close. There are virtually all parts of the plant poisonous, but the worst is the seed. Ingestion causes nausea, vomiting, burning in the mouth, abdominal cramps and more. Laburnum therefore has nothing to look for in the home garden.
Holly - only slightly toxic
Even if it sounds harmless at first, holly (Ilex aquifolium) is not without danger. Who consumes the berry-like fruits must expect gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea and vomiting. It is recommended to drink plenty of water after consumption. Have children eaten the tempting red fruits, but you should go immediately to the doctor.
Belladonna - dangerous to children
Children should be aware of the dangers of the deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) even in their early childhood. As the fruits of belladonna which the "real cherry" are very similar, they entice quickly to snack. The first signs of poisoning after eating the berries are dilated pupils, reddened skin, increased heart rate, speech and swallowing disorders, dryness in the mouth and throat. Just three berries are enough and the child is in mortal danger!
Pfaffenhütchen - poisoning not immediately recognizable
The Pfaffenhütchen is a spindle shrub that can grow up to 4 meters high. From May to June, the spiked cap bears white-green flowers. The treachery at the Pfaffenhütchen is that poisoning symptoms show up only several hours after consumption. These can be circulatory disorders, abdominal cramps and nausea. If a poisoning is suspected, it is best to go to the doctor immediately.
